What is unique about hiking in Martinique?

First of all, we must cover acclamation to the heat and the level of humidity. The temperatures oscillate between 22/23° and 32/33° Celsius; Under the sun this can become an added difficulty; tropical showers are always possible. Therefore, it is imperative to have with you the following:

  • A supply of water, 1.5 à 2 liters per person
  • A cap, and a change of T-shirt
  • A sunscreen with a high SPF
  • A windbreaker

Next, a word about the topography. Here the hikes have the reputation of climbing and descending all the time. After all, another nickname for Martinique is « Martinique of the 400 hills »! The hilly terrain even made Christopher Columbus turn back during his first stop on Martinique...

Even in the level 1 hikes, you must expect a change in altitude between 200 and 300 meters.

In level 2, for the 4-5 hour hikes, you should expect a change in altitude between 500 and 700 meters.

This is above all true for hikes in the North of Martinique, a tropical mountainous zone.

We also propose hikes along the coast, in a more calm relief, but there your enemy can be the sun, if you leave too late in the morning and if you are poorly protected and hydrated.

As a reward for your efforts you can be sure of:

  • High altitude viewpoints that offer gorgeous views and a variety of scenery
  • Different kinds of plant life according to the altitude of the zone (humid or dry)

Let’s talk about the variety of species! Here, in the tropical zone, everything is flourishing in comparison to a temperate climate. For example: More than 200 species of ferns are recognized in Martinique; In a temperate climate there are only twenty!

The insular forest regions having a strong biodiversity are biological conservatories of a small size but of considerable interest: There are no less than 40 sites that qualify as natural monuments (source DIREN) on the whole territory of Martinique (from the north to the south).

The forest is a true treasure of the country that deserves to be defended.

SEVERAL LEVELS OF HIKING ARE PROPOSED:

rando niv 1Level 1

n the tropical forest, or on the paths along the coast, you discover how much variation there is within Martinique. It’s a hike that is accessible to everyone, if you’re in good health and if you walk from time to time already. Visitors from temperate climates must be careful to follow the advice specific to hiking in a tropical climate (water, clothes, shoes etc.). Read the itinerary for level 1

rando niv 2 Level 2

Level 2 is defined by the higher change in altitude, and/or distance, and/or by repetition several days in a row. Mount Pelée is accessible to most, preferably accompanied by your guide, to profit from his or her knowledge about this type of volcano and vegetation. You will take the time necessary to acclimate to the change in altitude (usually 4 to 6 hours). Read the itinerary for level 2
